Mountain areas cover around 34% of Veneto's regional territory, but are home to less than 10% of its population.
Mountain areas have been subdivided into homogenous zones on which the Mountain Communities are founded according to criteria based on economic and social territorial units.
Veneto's 19 Mountain Communities include 171 municipalities that are either totally or partially in mountain areas. Since the beginning they have aimed to valorise mountain areas through the active participation of local populations.
In 2008, 612 working units were involved in forestry management in the region. Aims include the hydrogeological protection of the territory, soil preservation, and the enhancement of woodland and the natural environment.
The last census, carried out in 2000, revealed a total of 568 mountain dairy farms, which is testimony to the efforts made to promote the development and preservation of mountain areas through strategies which safeguard the environment and landscape, cultural and historic values, and the genuineness and uniqueness of the agricultural produce of Veneto's mountains.
